Technological advancements, evolving patient needs, and growing disparities in access to care all create fertile ground for innovation in healthcare. Through The Bright Project, students were pushed to explore innovative solutions to these pressing challenges. In partnership with the Illinois Science and Technology Coalition (ISTC) and Kidalytics, we focused on equipping students with practical skills in design thinking, data analytics, and entrepreneurship. The students were tasked with developing creative, technology-driven solutions that address some of the healthcare sector's most persistent issues.
Today, we see apps that allow patients to speak to doctors from their phones, but access to these advancements isn't equal for everyone. Marginalized communities, in particular, often struggle to benefit from these technological breakthroughs, leading to a widening gap in healthcare equity. The Bright Project emphasizes how essential it is to bridge that gap.
The healthcare landscape is riddled with inefficiencies and disparities that cannot be solved by traditional means alone. Throughout the summer, students worked to understand and address these disparities. They tackled challenges such as improving healthcare access in underserved rural areas and finding ways to harness AI to assist individuals with disabilities. One standout project featured an AI-based solution to help the visually impaired navigate their environment safely and independently. Another team created an app designed to close the healthcare gap in rural communities, where many struggle to receive even basic medical care. As part of their learning, participants explored the intricacies of healthcare challenges, ideating and refining their solutions with the help of industry experts and mentors
From start to finish, the experience offered students a real-world understanding of how technology and creativity can be combined to drive meaningful change in the healthcare industry. Our collaboration with ISTC and Kidalytics demonstrates the power of partnerships in fostering the leaders and problem solvers of tomorrow.
