A Decade of Impact

Ten years ago, I started The Gray Matter Experience with a belief I couldn’t fully prove yet:

That young people—especially Black youth—don’t lack talent. They lack access. They lack exposure. They lack early opportunities to see what’s possible—and to practice becoming it.

And over the last ten years, I’ve had the privilege of watching what happens when young people are met with opportunity early—and consistently.

I’ve watched students walk in unsure of themselves and walk out pitching ideas in rooms they never imagined being in. I’ve watched alumni turn that confidence into internships, into careers, into businesses of their own. I’ve watched proximity, belief and practice completely shift what someone thought their life could look like.

That’s the work.

Because in today’s world, technical skills alone aren’t enough. A recent Cisco study named business acumen as one of the biggest gaps facing young professionals. And the World Economic Forum tells us that 65% of today’s students will work in jobs that don’t even exist yet.

So the question becomes—what are we actually preparing them for?

At Gray Matter, the answer has always been bigger than jobs.

We’re building mindsets.

Savvy decision-makers. Innovators. Young people who know how to navigate rooms, build ideas, communicate value, and solve real problems.

And when you pair that with what I see every day in our young people—their creativity, their boldness, their willingness to challenge what exists—you don’t just get participants.

You get disruptors with direction.

You get leaders.

You get a ripple effect that extends far beyond a single program—into families, communities, and the future of this city.

Because when young people are given access early and intentionally, they don’t just participate.

They build.

They build businesses. They build networks. They build new pathways—not just for themselves, but for others coming behind them.

And watching that happen—over and over again— for the past 10 years, has been one of the greatest honors of my life.

I don’t take lightly what it means to have been trusted to build this. To steward something that sits at the intersection of potential, opportunity, and possibility for so many young people.

I’m grateful that what I believed ten years ago proved to be true. I’m especially grateful for the young people who trusted us—who showed up, took risks, and allowed us to be a part of their journey.

Grateful for every person who saw it early and chose to believe with me—before there was proof, before there were outcomes, before it all made sense on paper.

And if you’ve been watching from the sidelines—you’re up. The next generation needs your support, your time, and your investment.
