Gray Matter, The Chicago Bulls Community, and United Airlines collaborated to offer Infinity STEM High School students an exciting opportunity to learn about financial decision-making. This engaging workshop focused on empowering the next generation with essential skills in budgeting, saving, investing, and giving back to the community while emphasizing the importance of making sound financial decisions.
It was fun managing the money that we were given and making money decisions and sacrifices with my friends.
With the average income in a Latin household being $55,321 and the dollar circulating for only 48 hours before it leaves the community, it is essential for the students to understand the effect of their financial choices on their lives and those around them. During the workshop, the students were split into groups and given a fixed income to budget. They used the budget to purchase necessities such as food, housing, transportation, and other discretionary expenses while traveling to different neighborhoods in Chicago.
This activity gave the students a real sense of what it's like to budget their income while living in Chicago. One student shared, “It was fun managing the money that we were given and making money decisions and sacrifices with my friends.”
After the activity, guest speakers Lucy Camarena, Lisbeth Jaimes, and Raul Rosas shared their expertise and personal entrepreneurship journeys with the students. Their valuable insights helped to illuminate the importance of financial literacy and its role in shaping a brighter future for our communities.
The financial education workshop in partnership with the Chicago Bulls and United Airlines was an incredible success, thanks to the collective efforts of our inspiring speakers, dedicated team members, and the enthusiastic participation of Infinity STEM High School students. Empowered with valuable insights into financial decision-making, budgeting, saving, investing, and giving back, these students are now better equipped to shape their financial futures and positively impact their communities.
